As a Pokemon fan, it reminded me in some ways of Red from the video games, not Ash from the anime. Despite a few flaws, the story is pretty great until the 3rd act. The 3rd act is filled with so many problems that plague previous Pokemon movies that will even leave hardcore Pokemon fans clueless on what is happening.
The 3rd act has so many 'jump the shark' or 'deus ex machina' moments out of nowhere. How bad is the third act? Well unlike the other Pokemon movies, at least for me, 'I Choose You' has such a charming well-developed plot with great moments that it makes it even worst when the 3rd act arrives, ruining the entire journey with such a horrible way to wrap things up with bad, sometimes laughably ridiculous, moments. For example, there is this one unexpected scene around Pikachu that is supposed to be dramatic but instead the audience couldn't help but laugh.
Also on a side note, the art-style and animation is just gorgeous. To the Pokemon fans, it really shows another side of Kanto. To ordinary folks who never gotten into Pokemon, the art-style and animation is breathtaking. In fact, unlike other Pokemon movies, this doesn't take place in one centralized location. In fact, cities and towns are barely present in this movie.
Much of it is focused on the more nature-oriented side of Kanto from woods reaching the skies, to massive rivers flowing past the horizon, to vast valleys filled with roaming Pokemon, to towering mountains that go past the clouds. It really is a beautiful treat for those eyeing for detail or quality animation.
Other than that, if I had to choose my favorite moment Spoiler Alert , the movie shows a literal, deep and honestly somewhat depressing comparison between the charming and fun world of Pokemon where at the age of 10 you can freely explore the world with a magical creature by your side and the real world yes, the REAL WORLD where many ordinary people feel stuck in boring everyday lives, dreaming what's out there in the world, thinking to themselves that you'll never really know what's out there unless you go there.
Never expected, in the history of the Pokemon series, that they ever went there, making a comparison to the Pokemon world and the real world. It truly leaves you wondering about how magical the Pokemon world really is. With all this being said, I recommend people see it, whether your just not into the Pokemon series or a hardcore fan of the Pokemon games or anime. If they fixed the third act, I might even dare say that this movie could even be one of the best animated films ever made.
Other than that, the plot, characters and animation are excellently developed in the first two acts and really brings out a sense of adventure, freedom, friendship, charm, awe and wonder to me that honestly I can't really find in many other major films. And omfg!! I haven't watched the anime series for a few years and I've missed a few movies I plan to watch them soon but this new movie..
I remember watching the Pokemon films way back since the first one came out to the west back in At that time, Pokemon was a huge worldwide phenomenon and I believe the closet thing for it to have a second coming was Pokemon Go back in Yes Pokemon had been around for years but its popularity, from my point of view was sort of fizzling around the early 's.
Maybe that was around the time I grew out of it before getting back into it around when I went on a nostalgia trip with it. When this movie was announced, I was hyped and I was never hyped for a Pokemon film ever since I was a kid. When the trailer came out revealing the characters and all, I was one of those fans that were disappointed that Misty and Brock were replaced by two different characters who would have not much importance to the series anyway. I'll get to those two later. After seeing this movie, I will say that the movie is definitely refreshing compare to the other previous films that were released in the past.
In fact I think they were weakest films out of the Pokemon franchise. So it's nice to see a retelling of the original series that was more like a story. But a good movie does have flaws. I think the two new characters that Ash encounters with were OK but flat. Both almost share the same personality traits as Brock and Misty and they could've had them but introduce them in a different way, since this is confirmed to be an AU alternative universe story.
I can see they were at least trying to be different but they still show those similar traits. I mean Verity shares pretty much the same traits and tropes as Misty. Both love water types, both are snarky, both are hardheaded and both have family problems. Which BTW Verity's situation was mentioned once and was never shown again during the rest of the movie.
Sorrel's traits and tropes are pretty similar to Brock with him helping Pokemon in need. They were OK but they share the same personalities and they never really went anywhere with their plots. Gary is pretty much overrated in my opinion and I don't mind Gary. While that does sound good on paper I don't think it would work as a whole movie considering how much focus there needs to be.
However after watching it, I think it could work in this film. I understand that the past friends were shown in the credits and while that's great that they weren't forgotten I think they should deserve more. I thought Team Rocket would only been seen once in the film but TR were as usual in this movie like plenty of others. Just there and do nothing, can there be a time where they don't appear at all? I hate how TPCI only had one of Shinji Miyazaki's score in the final part of the movie and replaced most of it with dub made music.
In the past since Celebi's movie they kept it in throughout! I understand it's more royalties but why? Other companies, when it comes dubbing, be it from the west or Japan keep the original music as intended in all dubs like Thomas the Tank Engine or Disney etc.
Shinji's Miyazaki's music is underrated and needs to be heard more often. Most of the themes in this movie were recreated themes from the anime and games, you think they might, TPCI, understand that! As for the positives, I like Ash and Pikachu's bond it does showcase the emotions very well and there were at times I almost cried and I'm not ashamed of saying that! I love the fact that Ho-Oh got a movie on his own at last! The animation was amazing to look at, the story's message was good about being pure hearted.
I also love Ash's dream of a world without Pokemon. Oh yeah Pikacu talked in this movie and to be honest I love that as it showcases the bond between them. The movie is good despite its flaws. It's decent. If you decide to invest time into the movie, make sure to stick around for the credits. In my opinion, the visuals and music found there is the best of the movie, making one wonder why an entire film had to be crafted just to have it's essence buoyed primarily by nostalgia.
What this movie does successfully that nostalgia isn't necessarily hard for a year-old childhood-favorite franchise to muster up. Perhaps they realized this and took the easy way out. Nevertheless, expect to walk away with your heart full of childhood warmth and your mind forgetting the rest.
The movie progresses too fast. It felt like some clips from season one stitch together to remind us what happened in the first season, but the story goes to a different place. If you are a fan,-You will like how they remade some iconic scenes but originals are still better -Beautiful piano version of the theme song If you are new to pokemon,-You will not really introduced to the world of pokemon-They put legendary pokemon and a lot more from all generations unnecceserly.
It was my only complain not to see one of the best legendary Pokemon ever in a movie, totally deserved! Only wished it had more time Ho-oH in the film. They should have released that movie the same year with the Lugia and the 3 legendary birds, should have been awesome but it's better late than never.
I couldn't understand why they didn't use Misty and Brock though. It was a fun movie overall and I recommend it to everyone who was a Pokemon fan, especially the old fans like myself, reminded me of my school days!
This was pretty bad. They included stories from the original show, but mixed them together without a cohesive structure or the emotional weight they originally carried due to them being shoehorned in for this movie. They included Ash, Pikachu, and Professor Oak, but also included some weird Brock and Misty wannabes I'm only a fan of the original series. Sue me. They put Team Rocket in, but only as comedic relief to get kicked off-screen every few minutes. Also, what was up with James' voice?
Super creepy. They also didn't use any of the old voice actors for these original characters or at least I heard them that way. They put in Ho-oh but made the story about Ash being a chosen one, but then he wasn't the chosen one anymore for some reason I fell asleep intermittently throughout the second half of the movie.
They put in this cool-seeming old training guru but made him over the top in a bad way and unintentionally funny. They made Marshadow the main villain for some reason. Terrible movie that is only slightly redeemed by how cool the battle sequences are and how cute Pikachu is. A big disappointment. Please re-release the original animated movie and I'll go watch that again.
I Choose You plays out a little like a greatest hits of the show's first season. Ash and Pikachu are initially at odds with one another, they get attacked by a flock of Spearow, Ash catches his own Caterpie which later evolves up through Metapod and Butterfree, before being set free to migrate south, and he shelters an abused Charmander left out in the rain who later evolves up to become his trusty Charizard. However most crucially that brief, inspirational appearance of Ho-Oh in the first episode is not only present, but becomes the primary drive of the film's narrative.
